1/2″, 1 1/2″, and 3″ Crushed Limestone Overview

Crushed limestone is an aggregate composed of calcium carbonate. Once mined, the stone is crushed to specific sizes where it can be used in a variety of applications such as building materials, drainage, concrete, backfill, and road bases. If you’ve dealt with limestone in the past, you’ve likely noticed that there are different grades (sizes). These grades are based on the size of the stone after it has been crushed, and they’re used to specify the best stone for particular applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much crushed limestone do I need for my project?

Ozinga provides limestone on a per-load or per-ton basis. To determine how much limestone is needed for your project, try our crushed limestone calculator or get in touch with one of our aggregate specialists.

What crushed stone size is best for a driveway or parking pad?

For driveway stone, the best crushed limestone size depends on the application. 1/2 inch limestone is a good topcoat option for stone driveways. However, if the driveway will be used by heavy machinery, such as construction equipment, 1 1/2 or 3 inch limestone is a better option. If you’re looking for a driveway base stone, 3 inch limestone is a good choice.

Can crushed limestone be used for a stone walkway or path?

1/2 inch limestone is a great walkway stone because it’s durable, provides drainage / water runoff, and the small angular stones make it compactable. 1/2 inch limestone is a particularly good option if the path will be walked with wheelbarrows or similar equipment since the compacted stones allow wheels to roll more easily (rounded stones, like pea gravel, do not compact- make rolling more difficult). Other options for stone walkways and paths include pea gravel, gravel chips, and screenings.
